People, stars and late-night talks
This is something that happened in another Erasmus project I went to. This one was in Poland, we were staying in a 3-story building, far away from big cities and in a very mountainous region.
The building was pretty, but the most
important part of it was a little balcony on the 1st floor, that was connected
to two rooms.
During this Erasmus, me, Gonçalo and the
friends we met started a ‘tradition’. At night, after the activities we would
all get together on that little balcony. We would talk, play cards and
sometimes just lay down and stargaze.
The night sky over the balcony was always
filled with stars and in the background, we could see a giant mountain with its
peak always covered in snow.
I remember playing different card games
with them. Talking about the activities we did and the ones we would do
tomorrow, about cultural differences, and getting to know more about each other
and more about their culture.
I remember vividly one night in specific.
It was late already, people were starting to go to their rooms, to go rest. A
girl, named Halszka (that is now my girlfriend), was looking over the balcony,
to the beautiful mountainous scenario we had and looking at the stars. She was
trying to find a constellation, but she wasn’t being very good at it. Then, seeing
this scene, I said:
-
“What are you looking
for?”
-
“Stars” – she said, but let’s
just say my hearing isn’t the best
-
“HOES?!?” – I still don’t know
how I heard that
-
“Yes. Hoes. I’m looking in the
night sky for hoes”
-
“Oh, let me help you then”
We started looking at the sky together, and
then we found the Ursa Minor constellation. Problem? Neither of us remembered its
name in English, so I just said “The little bear you know?” and she replied “Oh
yeah, the little bear”.
We laughed at each other and stargazed
together for a little longer and then we went to sleep.
This story is not really like the other
ones I’ve been telling, it’s not about a funny moment, doesn’t end with me
having a broken arm. However, I think it’s the one I hold closest to my heart.
Whatever you like doing, if it’s
stargazing, looking for hoes in the night sky or just playing cards with your friends.
I think you should gather them and go to a faraway place. Just to enjoy each
other’s presence, just to go away from the pressure of society and do whatever
together.
This is a story about a group of unknown
people, going to a different place and getting to know each other, a story
about being human.
